EEEKKK you guys—it’s getting so close I can almost taste the Mickey-shaped treats! With just two days until Disney, I was chatting with a friend about one of the most magical parts of visiting the parks: character meet and greets. Beyond the hugs and photos, there’s something extra special about collecting those sometimes-precious signatures.

But here’s the twist: not all signatures are created equal. During the Christmas Party, for example, Jack and Sally don’t sign at all—they hand out a preprinted card with their autographs. If you were hoping to get their signature on a specific item, that can be a little frustrating. So let’s break down the two main types of Disney character signatures you’ll encounter:

📬 The Postcard Signature

Okay, maybe “dreaded” is a little dramatic—but if you’re hoping for a personalized autograph, postcards can feel disappointing.

  • What it is: Instead of signing your item, the character or helper hands you a card with their signature already printed.

  • Where you’ll see it: Often at special events or meals, especially when characters appear in pairs or groups.

  • Example: At the ‘Ohana breakfast, we received a card with multiple autographs. I almost panicked—we needed Stitch’s signature! Thankfully, Stitch signed our item and gave us the card.

✨ The upside: postcards are quick, consistent, and still make a fun keepsake. The downside: they don’t offer that personal touch of seeing the character sign your item in front of you.

✍️ Freehand (Live) Signatures

Now these are the ones that feel truly magical. Freehand signatures mean the character signs your item right there in front of you.

  • What they’ll sign: Autograph books, shirts, hats, bags, even unique items you bring along.

  • Why it’s special: Watching a character carefully sign your keepsake makes it feel one-of-a-kind.

  • Creative uses: On our last trip, we collected signatures with the plan to embroider them into a quilt—a lasting family treasure that blends Disney magic with creativity.

✨ Freehand signatures are interactive, personal, and a fun way to make your Disney memories tangible.

🎁 Tips for Collecting Signatures

If you’re planning to make autographs part of your trip, here are a few quick tips:

  • Bring the right pen: Characters with big gloves (like Mickey) do best with chunky pens or markers.

  • Think outside the autograph book: Consider items like photo mats, tote bags, or even pillowcases for signatures.

  • Protect your keepsakes: If you’re collecting on fabric or paper, bring a plastic sleeve or folder to keep items safe from rain or spills.

  • Check character schedules: Rare characters may only appear at certain events, so plan ahead if you’re hoping for a specific autograph.

💫 Why It Matters

Though I probably won’t collect many signatures this time around, I still think it’s one of the most entertaining and unique traditions in the parks. Whether you’re handed a postcard or get that magical freehand autograph, it’s all part of the Disney experience.

✨ And now I’m curious—what’s your favorite item to have autographed? Do you stick with the classic autograph book, or do you bring something creative for characters to sign?
